The Musician
Sergei Bassehes was born in China to Russian parents. When he was 14, he emigrated to South America, and for four years resided in Santiago, Chile. His involvement with music began there as a bass player in several bands featuring ethnic Russian, Gypsy and South American styles of music.
He later moved to New York where he became a protege of Vladimir Bodri, a close friend and promoter of Andres Segovia. Sergei also studied in California with George Sakellariou, one of the elect disciples of Segovia, and attended master classes by Miguel Abloniz, Abel Carlevaro, Alexander Lagoya and David Russell.
Sergei has 40 years of experience in studying and playing classical guitar and has been teaching for 30 years. His students have gone on to become good players; some attending conservatories, and some pursuing music careers. For the past 25 years, he has been teaching and performing on the Mendocino Coast.
